I en tidlig fase av den amerikanske invasjonen av Irak gikk det rykter om at Irakiske styrker hadde fått tak i amerikanske uniformer og hadde planer om å bruke uniformene for å infiltere invasjonsstyrken i startfasen. For å forhindre at noe slikt skulle skje ble soldatene i 1st.
Marine Division som skulle gjennomføre et av de innledende angrepene beordret til å gro bart:
“…US intelligence had reported, inaccurately, that Iraqi Special Forces had obtained U.S. military uniforms and planned to sneak in among U.S. formations -Major General James Mattis ordered his Marines to grow mustaches while still in Kuwait, though some of them were to young to do so. Mattis knew that mustaches were de rigeur in the Iraqi military – after the fashion of their leader. Iraqi agents would assume that they would fit right in. But before crossing into the country, Mattis planned to order his troops to shave off their facial hair, which would facilitate the unmasking of any Iraqy agents trying to infiltrate his division.”
